What to Expect on a Gag Grouper Charter

The Run Offshore
Gag grouper show up on structure at a wide range of depths, and where we run depends on the time of year and how the fish are stacked. Some days that means working ledges in the 30 to 60-foot range close to shore. Other days it means pushing further out to deeper structure where the bigger fish hold. We read the conditions and put you where the grouper are actually biting, not just where they might be.

How We Fish
Gag grouper are ambush predators and they live tight to structure, which means the fight starts the second the fish eats. We fish natural bait on stout tackle built to turn a fish before it gets back to the rocks. Live pinfish and cut bait both produce, depending on what the fish want that day. This is not finesse fishing. When a gag grouper eats, you need to be ready to put pressure on immediately or you will lose the fish in the structure. We rig for it and coach you through it.

What We Provide
Rods, reels, heavy tackle, and bait are included. We clean and bag your catch at the end of the trip. You’ll need a valid Florida saltwater fishing license, food and drinks for the day, sunscreen, and clothing appropriate for time on open water. We’ll walk you through everything else when you book.

The Captains
Captain Bobby has years of experience working the grouper structure off Crystal River and knows how to put clients on fish that are holding tight to bottom. Captain Alyssa is known for making the trip approachable for anglers at any experience level, from first-timers to serious bottom fishermen. Both captains are licensed, insured, and focused on getting you tight to fish.

What Our Clients Are Saying

"Captain Bobby and Alyssa are the best. I’d hang out with these 2 even if we weren’t catching fish. Which definitely won’t be a problem with them. They know how to get you on the fish. Bring plenty of ibuprofen. You’re going to be sore from fighting fish all day!! Great great people!"
Chris Haley
Angler
"Had the best inshore charter with Capt Bobby and Alyssa. Two of the most down to earth people I have met on the water. We caught a ton of fish and absolutely had a blast. Will definitely be back. I highly recommend these guys."

Gag Grouper Fishing FAQ's

Gag grouper season in Florida Gulf waters is set annually and includes a closed spawning season in late winter and spring. Open season typically runs through the summer and fall months. Dates are set by the state and federal agencies and can shift year to year, so check the current schedule at FWC or contact us directly before booking a grouper-focused trip.

Gag grouper hold on structure across a wide depth range. We find fish anywhere from 30 feet out to well over 100 feet depending on the time of year and where the bait and current are setting up. We adjust our approach based on where the fish are actually stacked rather than fishing one depth all season.

Gag grouper regulations include a minimum size limit and a bag limit that falls within the broader Gulf grouper aggregate. These numbers are set by the state and are subject to change, so we confirm current limits before every trip and fish strictly within whatever regulations are active at the time.

No. Native Charters FL operates under a Florida charter license that covers all paying passengers aboard. You do not need to purchase your own recreational saltwater fishing license to fish with us. If you plan to fish on your own outside of the charter, such as from shore or a private boat, you would need a separate license.

Live pinfish is one of the most effective baits for gag grouper, along with cut bait fished tight to structure. Presentation and rigging matter as much as bait choice since these fish live right in the structure and the fight starts immediately.

Gag grouper fishing requires more muscle than finesse. Beginners do well on these trips as long as they’re ready for a physical fight. We handle the rigging, the structure, and the strategy. Your job is to hold on and follow instructions the second a fish eats.

Yes. The Nature Coast has extensive natural hard bottom and ledge structure close to shore and further offshore, which makes it one of the more productive stretches of the Gulf for gag grouper. It’s a fishery we target consistently throughout the open season.
