Crystal River Fishing Report: Inshore and Offshore Action Heating Up

The Nature Coast is firing on multiple fronts right now, and whether you want to work the flats or make a run offshore, there’s something worth chasing. Here’s what we’re seeing out of Crystal River heading into the heart of the season.

Inshore: Redfish, Snook, and More

The redfish and snook bite has been strong lately, and the bait selection has been straightforward. Live shrimp, pinfish, and threadfins are all producing, particularly around the outer islands. Both incoming and outgoing tides have been holding fish, so you have flexibility on timing as long as you’re working the right structure.

Trout have started pushing deeper as water temperatures climb, and artificial drift jigging has been one of the most consistent methods for finding them. The key has been the tide. When water is moving at the top or bottom of the tide, the bite turns on. When it goes slack, things quiet down. Pay attention to that timing and you’ll put fish in the boat.

The shallower rock piles have been holding a solid mix of mangrove snapper, grunts, and hogfish. These fish are stacked up and accessible, which makes for productive bottom fishing without having to run far. Keep your eyes open while you’re out there too. Cobia have been cruising through, and a prepared angler with the right rod rigged and ready can capitalize on those encounters fast.

Offshore: Snapper Season Is Here

Red snapper season runs June 1 through October 26 this year, and we are ready for it. The waters from 80 to 120 feet are where the action will be concentrated, and along with red snapper, that same bottom is holding scamp grouper, lane snapper, and mangrove snapper in good numbers. This is as good a mixed-bag offshore opportunity as you’ll find anywhere on the Gulf Coast.

Red grouper are actively chasing bait right now, and your sonar is your best tool for finding them on the deeper hard-bottom flats. Sardines and squid have both been productive, and that should continue as water temperatures keep rising. For snapper specifically, early morning with live white bait is hard to beat. Get the anchor set before first light and be ready when the bite starts.

Gag grouper season has been announced for September 1 through October 1. That’s a tight window, and dates will fill in fast when anglers start planning around it.

A New Boat Joins the Fleet

We’re also excited to share that a newly built 35-foot offshore center console is being added to the Native Charters FL fleet for the 2026 season. More capacity, more capability, and more options for clients looking to make serious offshore runs. More details to come on that as we get closer.
