Red Snapper Season Is Closing: Last Trips Out of Crystal River

The clock is running on red snapper. The federal for-hire season in the Gulf closes at 12:01 a.m. on October 26, which makes Sunday, October 25 the last day we can put one in the box. After that, every red snapper that comes over the rail goes right back down until next season.

If you have been meaning to get offshore for snapper this year, this is the window. There are only so many fishable days between now and the 25th, and fall weather will take a few of them. The open dates we have left are the ones worth grabbing.

Where the Snapper Are and How Far We Run

Red snapper out of Crystal River are a deep-water fish. Our coast is shallow for a long way, so reaching the depths where quality snapper hold means a real run. This is a full offshore day, not a half-day trip, and we plan it that way from the dock.

The fish have held deep all season, and that has not changed heading into fall. We run to hard bottom and ledges in the deeper ranges, and on the long trips we push all the way to the Florida Middle Grounds, more than 100 miles out. The farther the run, the less pressure the fish have seen and the better the average size.

If snapper is the reason you are booking, tell us when you call. We will match the run to the fish instead of fitting snapper around something else. You can see how we fish them on our red snapper charter page.

What a Late-Season Snapper Trip Looks Like

These trips run on our 35-foot offshore center console. It is fast, which matters on a long run because every minute saved on the ride is a minute with baits on the bottom. It also has a full shaded deck and a private bathroom, and on a 10 to 12 hour day you will be glad for both.

Red snapper trips start at $2,995, and the Middle Grounds trip is $3,600 for up to six guests. Split across a full boat, that is a different number than it looks like at first. Tackle, bait, ice, water, and fish cleaning are all included, and you do not need a fishing license. Our charter license covers everyone on board.

We leave early from our private launch, so there is no waiting in line at a public ramp. Bring food, drinks, sunscreen, and a cooler to leave in your vehicle for the ride home. October mornings can be cool on the run out, so a light layer is worth packing. Snapper are rarely the only thing that comes up, and you can expect a mixed box by the end of the day. You go home with cleaned, bagged fillets.

What Happens After the Season Closes

Offshore fishing does not stop on October 26. It changes. Once red snapper close, we shift the plan toward what is open and biting, and fall is a good time to be out there. Mangrove snapper fight hard and eat as well as anything in the Gulf, and cooler water is when hogfish trips come into their own.

Seasons and limits change from year to year, and sometimes within a year. For the current rules, go straight to NOAA Fisheries for federal waters and FWC for Florida. Or call us. We fish under these rules every day and will tell you exactly what you can keep on the date you want to go.
